The Swedish Foundations’ Starting Grant
- Funds the project that was originally applied for from the ERC*.
- Is granted for one year at a time and up to five years, given that the researcher continues to apply for ERC Starting Grants (when eligible).
- Is funded by one of the participating organisations, which one that may be is decided among the SFSG partners (i.e. it is not possible to address a specific funder in SFSG).
- Is subject to the grant policy and conditions of the respective funder.
* Note that this implies that we will fund the same level of overhead as ERC does.
The SFSG grant will be discontinued if the researcher receives an ERC Starting Grant or other ERC Grant.
Eligibility
Applicants must fullfil all of the following criteria.
- Have applied for an ERC Starting Grant in the 2024 call (ERC-2024-StG).
- Recieved an ‘A’ for the application.*
- Have not been granted funding from ERC (or elsewhere for this project).
- Not be on the ERC reserve list (which is funded by the Swedish Research Council).
- The host institution must be in Sweden, this applies to both the original ERC application and the SFSG application.
- In addition to the above, the applicant must also apply for an ERC Starting Grant in the 2025 call (ERC-2025-StG), if fulfilling the eligibility criteria.
* This includes both applicants who received an ‘A’ after the interview and applicants who received an ‘A’ and were not invited to an interview.
How to apply
All applications must be submitted through our digital platform and comply with the instructions. Once your application has ben submitted it will be made available to all participating funders. Please do not contact the participating foundations directly.
In addition to contact details and some basic information about your ERC Starting Grant application, the requested documents include the following.
- The ERC-2024-StG application.
- The ERC-2024-StG evaluation report.
- A confirmation of submitting an application for the ERC-2025-Stg call (if eligible to apply).
- The application will require your electronic signature and that of your Head of department verifying that the host institution is willing to support a Swedish Foundations’ Starting Grant, if you are awarded a grant.

The assessment process
We rely on the ERC’s well-renowned peer review as a sufficient quality assessment and no further scientific evaluation review will be done of the applications.
Funding decision
The decision of awarding a grant will be taken individually by each participating funder according to their respective statutes, priorities, and available resources. Prior to these decisions the funders will consult between them.
Grant administration
All claims, payment(s), renewal(s) and reporting processes are managed by the respective funder that has awarded the grant. Upon the acceptance of a grant, the researcher must adhere to the funder’s grant policy and conditions.
